Peter Steele has century in suburban cricket

An unbeaten century by Peter Steele (MerivalePapanui) was the highlight of the second day’s play in the second round of the senior suburban competition. His century enabled Merivale-Papanui to declare its second innings closed at 149/5 after Christchurch W.M.C. had secured first innings points earlier in the day. The target of 144 runs for Christchurch to achieve outright points proved too steep and the game ended quietly. Upper Riccarton came the closest to getting an outright win. After both teams’ first innings had been completed it had a lead of 26 runs over Southern Districts. Upper Riccarton then went for some quick runs with Alan Kerrfeaturing prominently; scoring- a-hard hit 74. Southern Districts was asked to score 170 runs in two hours but it never looked likely and ended at 106/8.

Hoon Hay put on a vastly improved batting performance in its second innings to deny Woolston W.M.C. of a win. It was finally dismissed, after batting through till 5 p.m. for 162 leaving Woolston 94 runs to win. Woolston initially responded to the challange but lost wickets too quickly and had to settle for a draw.

Hornby gained a 77-run lead on the first innings when Sumner declared at 144/8. Hornby then scored 104 before declaring its second innings closed. This left Sumner 184 runs to get in 34 overs and lead by a well compiled 74 from Roydon McLeod, Sumner reached 149 for five, 35 runs short of victory. An outstanding performance was recorded by Mark Riley (Waimak Sawmills) in the Fourth B grade who scored 100 runs and he took five wickets for 17 runs. Another century was made by S. Shultz (Upper Riccarton), who scored 118 not out

in the third B Grade. Competition points are: Woolston W.M.C. 20, Christchurch W.M.C. 10, Upper Riccarton 10, Hoon Hay 7, Southern Districts 7, Homby 7, Sumner 4, Merivale-Papa-nui 4.
