Heart attacks cause many Maori deaths
PA Hamilton Maoris hit by heart attack had almost three times the death rate of nonMaoris, an Auckland study shows. The study involved 905 cases of heart attack (myocardial infarction) — including 300 sudden deaths — in the Auckland area in the year from March 1, 1981. The results are published in the latest issue of the “New Zealand Medical Journal”
The work was done by Auckland Medical School staff. The researchers said factors possibly contributing to the higher death rate included:
© A greater prevalence of smoking. 9 Low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. @ More severe heart disease in Maoris or the presence of other complicating diseases. ©Under-diagnosis of nonfatal heart attacks because of “less-thhn-the-best” medical care. k
Study results showed that three times as many men as women suffered heart attacks. Within 28 days of heart attack 27 per cent of men patients had died, compared with 21 per cent of women.
