Woman executed
Velma Barfield, the first woman executed in the United States in 22 years, died from a lethal injection last evening for the murder of her fiance. Barfield,, a 52-year-old grandmother, was convicted six years ago of killing her fiance by poisoning his beer and iced tea with arsenic. She also confessed to killing two elderly people and her own mother. Barfield went to her death in her own pink pyjamas rather than prison garb. — Raleigh, N. Carolina. The trial of 19 former Grenadan leaders, who are accused of murdering the former Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop, was yesterday adjourned until November 23 while the court considers a
legal challenge to its validity. The Chief Justice, Mr Archibald Nedd, said that he would rule on a defence motion challenging the validity of. his court on November 14. 4 St George’s. Withdrawal vote The United Nations General Assembly has called for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Kampuchea, which has been occupied by Vietnamese troops since December, 1978. It was the assembly’s fifth call for such a move., The vote on the resolution, similar to one adopted annually since 1979, was 110-22 with 18 abstentions — the biggest majority for? such a vote. The tally last year was 105-23 with 19 abstentions. — New York.

Hie 1953 work was bought by an unidentified private collector, The previous records in both categories were also for a de Kooning work, another of his “Two Women” series of paintings from the 19505, which sold at auction in November, 1982, for ?usyio,ooo. - New York.-
