Rats infest trawler
The crew of the Korean fishing trawler Oyang 77 left their ship yesterday at Lyttelton when a number of rats were found in the vessel. The 41 crew members left the trawler at 5.30 p.m. to allow it to be fumigated with cyanide gas. They are expected to return to their vessel at midday today. A spokesman for the ship’s Christchurch agent said its master, Captain Y. J. Kim, had asked for the ship to be fumigated before it entered dry dock on Tuesday for general maintenance.
The rat infestation was not serious. The crew had been aware of the problem since the ship’s arrival last week, said the spokesman. The Oyang 77 is a regular caller at Lyttelton, working from its base at the Port of Wanganui.
She will be in dry dock for 10 days and will then return ‘to her fishing grounds off the New Zealand coast. Rat infestations in visiting vessels are considered rare at Lyttelton, but four months ago the Russian cargo vessel Klara Zetkin was fumigated when rats were found in her cargo of fruit.
