‘No Budget handouts’
Wellington reporter Budget handouts next week will be non-existent, according to the Minister of Customs, Mrs Shields. Opening an Industries Fair in New Plymouth she said that she could not promise manufacturers any immediate benefits in the Budget. But what they would get would be more useful than temporary handouts; it would be economic manage-
ment based on sound principles and a predictable policy mix. The Government could take some immediate actions to solve particular symptoms or crises, but the over-all actions would be more vital, Mrs Shields said. These included decisions affecting the exchange rate, the money supply, import licensing, interest rate controls, and Government expenditure and revenue.
In the longer-term, the export sector had to be able to sustain itself, she said, and in the future Government support for exporting would be more selective and short-term. In particular, the Government would be looking at ways to help industries break into new markets and help them reach the critical point where exporting was profitable and self-sustain-ing.
