Anniversary of Treaty
A postal cover has been issued by the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R. and the Post Office to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty. The 12 countries which had scientific research programmes in the Antarctic during the International Geophysical Year (1.G.Y.) 1957-58 decided on a continued scientific effort on the continent and drew up the Antarctic Treaty. It was’ signed on December 1,1959, by Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan. New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, Britain and the United States. Since then, a further 20 countries have acceded to the Treaty, with 16 of them achieving consultative status through their coni
tinued scientific work in Antarctica.
The Waikanae artist, Maurie Conly, has designed the postal covers which will mark the anniversary, and 2500 of them are available. They will be post-marked with a special Post Office cancellation stamp at the Post Office at Scott Base on December 1.
The cost of ?2.50 a cover includes a set of recently released Antarctic research stamps. Up to five covers may be ordered by each person and they can be obtained by sending money with an application to Antarctic Treaty Anniversary Covers, Antarctic Division D.5.1.R., P.O. Box 13247, Christchurch. The applications should include a stamped addressed A 5 size envelope.
