The 12 countries which had scientific research programmes in the Antarctic during the International Geophysical Year (1.G.Y.) 1957-58 decided on a continued scientific effort on the continent and drew up the Antarctic Treaty. It was’ signed on December 1,1959, by Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan. New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, the Soviet Union, Britain and the United States. Since then, a further 20 countries have acceded to the Treaty, with 16 of them achieving consultative status through their coni

The cost of ?2.50 a cover includes a set of recently released Antarctic research stamps.
