Stop to N.Z. butter sought in Britain

NZPA staff correspondent London Britain’s Dairy Trade Federation has called for an, end to New Zealand butter imports, the “Scotsman” newspaper reports. It reports the federation’s B’ lent, Mr Nicholas ey, as saying that if the consumption trends continued there would be no butter eaten by 1990. Everyone would have switched to margarine or other low-fat spreads. He said that the New Zealand imports should stop because although its exportable tonnage was reducing about 3000 tonnes a year New Zealand’s share of the butter market was increasing as consumption in Britain was falling at a high rate. ■ Mr Horsley said New Zealand’s share was expected to be about 25 per cent this year. If the special Christmas offers were included it would end with about 53 per cent of Britain’s total market.
