IMAGINATIVE MATHEMATICIAN EARLIER THIS YEAR we advertised for two exceptionally talented mathematicians, preferably with an interest in physics, to work in Nelson, identifying recurring patterns in certain market price data stored in our computer. In addition, assistance is required in exploring mathematically certain extraordinary hypotheses in theoretical physics. Because the opportunity was so unusual (unique) for New Zealand, our original advertisement occasioned a great deal of scepticism and even outright disbelief, to such an extent that we believe that there are a number of exceptional New Zealanders to whom we could offer an outstanding, exciting and satisfying career that did not even apply! In the event, we have still only engaged one young man who is a first class honours graduate in Physics and he would be more than willing to confirm to any sceptic that the positions advertised were exactly as stated. While we would still prefer a physicist, due to our failure before, we are now prepared to widen our “acceptance filter” in an endeavour to fill the remaining vacancy. We will consider, therefore, a further mathematician, who, while not necessarily holding a degree in Mathemaatlcs, must have a strong mathematical, statistical or analytical background, and a good honours degree or better In. some scientific discipline. The successful applicant will also possess the ability to apply themselves to the solution of problems of an unusual nature, and to in fact develop the methods of solution. Of course, the high-calibre type applicants we are seeking would expect a salary commensurate with the difficulty of the work involved and the potential rewards of its successful completion. We are offering a one year contract at $20,000 p.a. minimum, and if both parties are satisfied, the appointment will become permanent and the salary will be $40,000 p.a. plus. Please apply in writing, giving complete details of age, academic attainments, leisure pursuits, Interests and hobbies, and any publications to: NELSON FOREX LIMITED P.O. Box 747, NelSQn.
