IMAGINATIVE MATHEMATICIAN EARLIER THIS YEAR we advertised for two exceptionally talented mathematicians, preferably with an interest in physics, to work in Nelson, identifying recurring patterns in certain market price data stored in our computer. In addition, assistance is required in exploring mathematically certain extraordinary hypotheses in theoretical physics. Because the opportunity was so unusual (unique) for New Zealand, our original advertisement occasioned a great deal of scepticism and even outright disbelief, to such an extent that we believe that there are a number of exceptional New Zealanders to whom we could offer an outstanding, exciting and satisfying career that did not even apply! In the event, we have still only engaged one young man who is a first class honours graduate in Physics and he would be more than willing to confirm to any sceptic that the positions advertised were exactly as stated.
