32 dogs battle for final places

By

TREVOR WILKES

The Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s T.A.B. meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park on Monday, will attract much attention.

Thirty-two dogs will battle to reach a place in the final of the Classique Cottages New Zealand Championships which is to be run on Thursday evening. There are four semi-finals, two from each heat will qualify, and the two fastest third-placed dogs will be the reserves.

The first heat is open, but it looks as though Wadderin Mist may have gained his top form at the right time, which would make him hard to beat. Every Show is in fine form and should be close up throughout, while the chances of Wadderin Girl and Kairaki Ben must also rate highly. Wee Donna Dandy appeals as the likely winner of the second heat, and should be at cramped odds. The decision to start her in a sprint race on her last visit to Christchurch is hard to fathom, but back to her pet distance here, the Southland bitch will be hard to

hold out. Chinook Lass is very talented, and looms as the main danger. Her win at Q.E. II Park a fortnight ago was a smart effort, and she could make Wee Donna Dandy work hard for victory.

The third heat is the T.A.B. trifecta event. Alvarez looked smart when winning the Phoenix Cup at the last meeting, and must be held in high regard again. Lady Wakanui, however, must be given one more chance. She has had little luck since her runaway win here just over a month ago, but promises to be hard to beat from the coveted inside draw. Wonder Wadderin always goes well, as does Galactic Gain, and neither should be far away. Gallant Man should be all the rage in the fourth heat, and with a clear run should be too good. Beaumaris is close to his best, though, and ran a good fourth here last start after being hampered. He’s just the type to upset. Winronin’s Dream is most consistent, but this will be her toughest test to date. However, she should be running on well.
