Enterprise’s trial pleases trainer

Special correspondent Dunedin Enterprise pleased his owner-trainer, Pat Heffernan, in his final fast workout for the New Zealand Cup at Moonlight, Otago, yesterday morning. Enterprise ran 3200 m

with Winfield Kai on Heffernan’s dirt track after starting 20m behind. “I was hoping you wouldn’t ask,” said Heffernan when questioned about the time. “He took a tick better than 4min 205.” Heffernan rates his track between eight and 10 seconds slower than a fast all-weather surface. “I would be looking at a horse to go that time on my l track to qualify,” he said. "I don’t place too much importance on times but I have no fears of him running out the distance in fast time. With an ounce of luck at the barrier he should be right there.” Enterprise will be given barrier practice this morning. Heffernan followed a siilar approach before the Hannon Memorial Free-for-all at Oamaru last month when Enterprise began quickly in contrast to his two previous races and won easily. Heffernan will take Enterprise to Christchurch tomorrow afternoon. Winfield Kai is in the final race at Addington on Tuesday. .
