NZ lamb holds up in sales
PA Wellington Although the demand for all. meats both at wholesale and retail in the United Kingdom was disappointing this week, New Zealand lamb has been able to maintain its share of the total volume traded, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. A sharp increase in domestic lamb prices may be reflected in improved demand for the New Zealand product next week. In live markets this week, domestic lambs rose by 5p a lb, with depot sales for light weight carcases realising 79p a lb. Beef prices generally showed a very slight in-
crease while pork eased ; back by 0.5 p a lb. » On the Smithfield market, New Zealand PL grade lamb is being quoted at 66.5 p fo 66p a lb (SNZ 3.68 to 3.77 a kg). The United States market . for imported manufacturing beef edged further down this week with a weakening on domestic wholesale beef ’ prices. Offerings from New Zealand and Australia were ■; particularly light, thus prices quoted should be regarded as nominal. New ’’ealand boneless cow beef was down a cent to average US9Oc a lb cif (SNZ4.O4 a kg), and New Zealand boneless bull beef. also dropped to average USIOIc a lb cif ($NZ4.53 a kg).
