Punishment in schools
Sir, — In reply to Edna Diggs’s letter, let me suggest that in this nominally Christian country discipline standards in schools should come from the life and teachings of Jesus. Indeed, the “spare the rod and spoil the child” of the old way was superseded by the teachings of Jesus regarding love and relationships. You cannot lovingly beat a child. No explanation could take away the physical, psychological and spiritual hurt. — Yours, etc., COLIN JAMIESON. October 31, 1984.
Sir, — The attitude to children of people such as Edna Diggs appals me. Carried to extremes, it results in religious lunatics roasting four-year-old children alive in ovens. Nobody is going to beat my children because it says so in a
book written by men whose oppressive religion and attitudes have persisted thousands of years after they should have died out. Children heed love, affection, understanding and caring people around them. The way to better discipline in the classroom is through more teachers, smaller classes and a genuine interest in each child achieving her greatest potential as a human being. — Yours, etc., T. E. MOON. October 31, 1984.
