33M tonnes of tailings to be dumped on farms
PA Hamilton The Waihi Gold Company plans to store 33 million tonnes of waste rock and tailings on six farms about 2km from Waihi. The project manager, Mr Roger Craddock, said that the company had exercised options to buy six farms in the Baxter Road-Golden Valley area. Although the layout of tailings disposal was not finalised tests had been done to show the area was suitable for waste and tailings, Mr Craddock said. About half of the 315 hectares to be bought will be used for the tailings dams.
Mr Craddock said that the disposal scheme would be designed with the aid of a landscape architect to fit in
with the existing land contours. A Waihi conservationist. Mr Maurice Cowan, said that those who had sold their land were fortunate. “At least they can get out of the place,” he said. “The people who should be sitting up and taking notice now are those on the boundary.” Mr Cowan said that because taxpayers’ money in the form of Rural Bank loans had been used to bring the land to a productive state, ultimate responsibility for its use should rest with the Government
