Beauty contests

Sir,—Betty Roberts should blame Mr Macaulay, not me, for the remark about bear-baiting, but she missed the point he wanted to make, though I doubt if he would have approved of the practice. Surely individual women have the right of choice whether to be sex objects or not. If they don’t, they

are perfectly entitled to dress in sackcloth and ashes without makeup but those who wish should be allowed to enter for beauty contests. As for concern about anorexia, etc., I am reminded of another quotation, “the curious incident of the dog in the night.” The dog had done nothing in the night — which was the curious incident. The curious incident involving N.O.W. is that as yet it has not done anything about women smoking, playing rugby, running marathons or taking unnatural food, i.e. the pill. — Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON.
