Mrs Gandhi’s death

Sir, — Very often words come true. A few months back you ended an editorial with the words “The future of India looks bleak,” as if it was pointing at Mrs Gandhi. Stifle the voice of the minorities with violence,'juggle around the democratic processes and dream of a rule to be inherited by your own children-and you have to meet the fate Mrs Gandhi has met. It could be a lesson for other powers -thatbe in the world, albeit a very costly one. Another bait has been put up as Prime Minister in the person of Mr Rajiv Gandhi. The man in the street is angry and has enough reason. A good political decision would have been for Rajiv io sit back at least for the time being. The future has its beginnings in the past and I keep my fingers crossed. — Yours, etc.,

T. P. SlNGH.Lincoln, November 1, 1984.
