Royal sympathy

NZPA-Reuter London The Queen sent a message of sympathy to the Indian people yesterday after the,- assassination of Mrs Gandhi, saying that the world had lost one of its most distinguished leaders. In a message addressed to the Indian President, Mr Giani Zail Singh, she said, “Prince Philip and I are profoundly, shocked by the death of Mrs Gandhi. “The world and the Commonwealth has lost one of its most distinguished leaders and on behalf of the British people I offer you and the people of India our deepest sympathy at this tragic moment.” The Queen had also sent a private message of condolence to Rajiv Gandhi, Buckingham Palace said. Princess Anne, who is on a two-week visit to the Indian sub-continent, will remain in New Delhi until

Mrs Gandhi’s funeral tomorrow.

She was to have met Mrs Gandhi for the first time on Wednesday evening as guest of honour at a dinner at Mrs Gandhi’s home.
