Furniture firm to close

When Mr C. A. Neate bought a second-hand goods business in Tuam Street about 55 years ago, he had ambition.

Hard work paid off and on his death, 27 years later, Neates Furniture Company had become a household name in Christchurch. The business was then taken over by his son, Jack, who another generation later, has decided to “pull the blinds and call it quits.”

When the cash registers ring for the last time tomorrow, Mr Jack Neate says he will have no regrets. He will be happy to reflect on the service given by the family for more than half a century instead. “The lease has expired and we have just decided that it’s time to give it away,” said Mr Neate. Special sales have been held at the store to mark the closing of the business.
