Ten European horses for Hollywood Park
NZPA-Reuter London Ten horses from Europe have been entered for the inaugural Breeders’ Cup series — the richest day’s racing ever — to be run at Hollywood Park, near Los Angeles, on November 10. As many as 20 horses had been considered possibles, but when the pre-entry stage closed there were five from England, three from France, and two from Ireland.
The Breeders’ Cup executive director, Daniel van Clief, jun., said: “We are very pleased with both the number and the quality of the runners we have received from Europe. I think it is going to make for some very exciting , racing. “When the question was first asked about how many runners we would get from Europe my guess was about eight to 12, so I have not been far out.”
With SUSIO million (SNZ2O.4 million) in prize
money for the seven races some experts had been expecting a bigger challenge, especially from France. But it is believed that the level of entry fees — extremely high in certain cases — and the long trip to California at the end of the season may have deterred some owners.
Entries from England are the top-class performers Never So Bold and w Lear Fan, the talented unpredictable Prego, Alphabatim, runner in the Laurel International earlier this month, and the sprinter Reesh. Ireland’s representatives are Park Appeal, the top two-year-old filly in England and Ireland, and Princess Tracy, which was unplaced in Europe’s top sprint race, the Prix de I’Abbaye at Langchamp. The French runners are Laurel International winner Seattle Song, All Along, winner of last year’s Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe, and the little-known Lashkari.
