$200,000 given to Spirit fund
PA Auckland The half-completed Spirit of New Zealand training ship received a $200,000 boost yesterday from an, Auckland businessman, aged 78, who once worked as a shilling-a-month deckhand. Mr Roy Allen and Mrs Allen made the gift on Wednesday at the Henderson shipyards where the 230-ton vessel is being built. It is the biggest cash gift made to the Spirit of Adventure Trust which is building
the sail-training vessel. The money will start an endowment fund to help meet maintenance costs when the Spirit of New Zealand is launched in 1986. Mr Allen, founder and chairman of L. R. Allen, Ltd, which makes advertising calendars, said he made the gift to help to get young people interested in boating. “Boating helps develop character, self-reliance, and responsibility. It is one of the best educations, I know,” Mr Allen said.
