Charity bicycle race to start off festivities
To start off Carnival Week, a Celebrity Cycle Race using BMX bicycles will be held through the City Mall today, beginning at about 12.30 p.m. Carnival Week has been organised to combine the festive activities associated with the New Zealand Trotting Cup meeting, the New Zealand Cup meeting and the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Personalities from the media, sporting bodies and the main organisations involved will participate in the cycle race for a prize of $5OO, to be donated to the charity they are representing. The race will start in the City Square, go south down High Street, turn right into Cashel Street, turn around at the Bridge of Rememberance and return to the Square by the same route (see map.) A lucky draw with a prize of two Big Softie reclining chairs, valued at more than $lOOO, will also be held from tickets handed out during the day by the City Guides. The winner must, of course, be on hand at the finishing post to collect his or her
prize. SUNDAY Workout at Addington Raceway, beginning midmorning, featuring cup horses and personality race, and two-year-old qualifying races. Bars and food kiosks open. TUESDAY N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club trotting at Addington Raceway; first race at--12.15 p.m. Feature race, $125,000 N.Z. Trotting Cup. WEDNESDAY Canterbury Jockey Club races at Riccarton; first race at 12.30 p.m. Feature race, $70,000 N.Z. 2000 Guineas.
First day of the Canterbury A. and P. Show; gates open at 8.30 a.m. The largest show in the Southern
Hemisphere, the first day features sheep judging. THURSDAY
Second day of Canterbury A. and P. Show. School Children’s Day, featuring the cattle parade, and Mark Todd in horse events. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9 Trots at Addington Raceway; first race at 12.15 p.m. Feature race, $30,000 Benson and Hedges Free For All. Third day of Canterbury A. and P. Show. People’s Day features the Grand Parade and finals of all events. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 Canterbury Jockey Club races at Riccarton Raceway; first race at 10.50 a.m. Feature races are the $85,000 Chemico N.Z. Cup, $22,500 Canterbury Gold Cup and $22,000 Movements International Stewards Welcome Stakes for two-year-olds. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13 Trots at Addington Raceway; first race at 5.40 p.m. Feature race, $lOO,OOO Sires Stakes Final for three-year-olds. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 17 Trots at Addington Raceway; first race at 5.35 p.m. Feature races are the $60,000 Taubmans Dominion Trotting Handicap for best trotters and $20,000 Christchurch Airport Travelodge* Free For All.
