Clyde Dam rises from the rubble
The §586 million Clyde Dam emerges from the rubble of more than two million cubic metres of excavated foundation material. When it is completed in 1988, the hydro-electric dam in the. Clutha Valley will have a maximum generating capacity of about 432 megawatts, which could later be increased to 610 megawatts by two further generators. The construction of the 62m-high concrete dam is a
joint venture by the Ministry of Works and Development and the private consortium of Zublin-William-son. About 1,000,000 cubic metres of concrete will be used in the dam’s construction. Of this, the consortium will place 950,000 cubic metres. Lake Dunstan, a new 26 sq km lake, will be formed behind the dam. It will extend through the Cromwell Gorge, and widen beyond Cromwell.
