Chch drug raids
More than 10 people were arrested yesterday after a series of dawn drug raids in Christchurch, Nelson, and Invercargill.
The co-ordinated effort, involving 22 detectives, drug squad dog handlers, and uniformed policemen, was the result of six months undercover work by a police constable. The raids centred on 15 houses in Christchurch.
Several people appeared in the District Court yesterday afternoon facing a variety of drug-related charges. They included selling cannabis preparation (hashish), selling and cultivating cannabis, and possessing cannabis seeds.
Selling cannabis preparation, a class B drug, is considered very serious by the police. It carries a maximum sentence of 10 years jail.
Quantities of cannabis and growing plants were seized during the raids. A stolen television set was also recovered. The supervisor of the Christchurch drug squad, Detective Inspector Bob McMeeking, said that inquiries were continuing and more arrests were likely.
