Service to school recalled
One hundred years of family service to Hagley High School were recalled by a senior former pupil and a former caretaker at a recent school reunion.
The former pupil, Mrs Nellie Langford, aged 96, met Mr Alan Mclvor for the first time at the Westonians’ reunion on October 27. Mr Mclvor retired earlier this year after 28 years as caretaker.
Mrs Langford’s parents and then her brother were caretakers at the school (then Christchurch West High School) from 1876 to 1948. She and her eight brothers and sisters helped clean and heat the school. Mrs Langford shares the position of senior former pupil with Mrs Doris Hut-
ton, also aged 96. Both began at the school as infants in 1893.
