Bid to prevent pollution

PA Auckland The owner of a company fined 510,006 for polluting a Papatoetoe water supply travels the world as a United Nations environmental adviser. Dr Harry Pierau says his company, Waste Management Auckland, Ltd, will rebuild its operation to ensure a similar accident will never happen again. The company was fined this month after it admitted polluting the Puhoinui Stream with toxic waste. Water Board officials found a “significant pollution level” in the stream, with high levels of arsenic. It was the fourth time the company had been convicted on pollution charges. In July it was fined 5200 on each of three charges. Dr Pierau said the discharge in each case was minimal considering the large amount of waste material the company processed every day. Dr Pierau said he held degrees in natural science and was a world authority on waste disposal.,
