Charity appeals
Sir, — Referring to your article on charity appeals, may I put in a word for the smaller voluntary welfare organisations also scrambling for a share of the welfare dollar. The sophisticated approach of the larger organisations, with their professional advisers, is making the small locally-based groups’ . work extremely hard. Often nationally-based groups cut across local groups’ interests and make raising public awareness at a local . level difficult Even the local media are often un-co-operative if - they have already published or broadcast national publicity items in the recent past.. Money given to smaller local organisations is more likely to stay in the local community. Money given directly benefits local people as recipients of the welfare and businesses which carry out services. Spare a thought and a share of your charity dollar for the street appeals which are more likely to be your local organisations. — Yours, etc., .... M. A. CHAPMAN, - - Administrator, Canterbury Arthritis Society, October 29, 1984.
