Women’s forums
Sir, — At the Southland women’s forum six-page policy brochures were issued as the basis of discussion for the day.. This strategy pre-empted the individual’s right to initiate open discussion. No discussion were invited from the open forum, nor was any allowed. The media was banned after the Minister’s address — a denial of human rights. Mrs Hercus then spoke to the large gathering, stating “policy is non-negotiable.” This resounding proclamation simply turned women participants into domestic housekeepers sorting the bureaucrats’ files into some order or priority. If women want to prevent this manipulation of women spreading throughout all the forums, then they must reverse the strategy employed and ensure that women’s forums .are opened to all media representatives; women initiate and negotiate “policy” only; chairwomen and reT
corders are impartial, hot chosen frorri';dne or two specific organisations. — Yours, etc., R. G. CAUGHEY, Fairfax, Southland. October 29, 1984.
