Workshops inspected

Christchurch City councillors inspected the council’s small enterprise workshop building in St Asaph Street yesterday. The councillors made a half-hour tour of the 15 small businesses in the building, a former Post Office building, before a meeting of the employment and promotion committee. Thirteen of the 15 units have been let to small busi-

nesses, including a Lebanese wheat-crushing business, knife-making, photography, clothing design, and diet meals. The average rent for the

units was $25 to $3O a week, for 500 sq ft, said the senior co-ordinator of the council’s employment promotion division, Mr Gordon Bradley. The aim of the development is to enable people to get started in business without a big rental. Of the people working in their units yesterday, most said the cheap rental had attracted them to the location. It was the first time that many councillors had visited the workshop. They were impressed with the initiative shown in the ventures.
