Big A.C.C. grant to defensive driving
PA Wellington The Defensive Driving Council has been given $llB,OOO from the Accident Compensation Corporation in a number of grants for those involved in accident prevention and rehabilitation.
The grant, for the 1984-85 financial year, is to help with both the main defensive driving course and the Matchless Motor-cycle Rider Training Schools.
The council received $768,000 between 1975 and 1983.
The corporation’s managing director, Mr J. L. Fahy, said the Order of SL John Association had received $lOO,OOO for teaching first aid techniques in industry. The teaching scheme functions in various centres from a Wellington-based directorate and concen-
trates on hazards peculiar to specific industries. The Consumers Institute has been granted $90,000 to continue helping its product safety programme. The institute intends to use the funds to test and monitor products such as jugs, heaters, ladders, washing machines, motor mowers, trainer cycles and circular saws. The Water Safety Council will receive $60,220 (with a further $12,000 set aside for approved contingencies) to fund a number of projects, including publishing river rafting information and the development of a flag-awareness programme for divers. A grant of $44,300 will go to the Standards Association to fund, for example, the development of New Zealand standards for low fire risk clothing for children,
reflective clothing and a code of practice for water slides. Grants for research projects go to the Logging Industry Research Association with $50,560 to fund safety research in log harvesting and the University of Canterbury’s department of sociology which will receive $25,291 to study family problems created by caring for a severely physically disabled spouse in the home. Mr Fahy said $106,000 had been given towards special rehabilitation projects including assistance to the Crippled Children Society. Other grants include $35,000 to the Mountain Safety Council for various projects, and $4285 to Mrs Beverly Pentland to help with her fireworks safety campaign.
