Protesters greet cricketers
PA Auckland A group of Sri Lankans demonstrated outside Auckland Airport yesterday morning when its New Zealand cricket team assembled before its departure for Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Twelve members of Auckland’s Tamil Society were making a peaceful protest against the alleged genocide of the minority ethnic group in Sri Lanka. A similar protest was held in March when .New Zealand left for a tour of Sri Lanka. The society decided to hold yesterday’s demonstration because the New Zealand cricket team will pass through Sri Lanka and play two one-day matches there before starting its six week tour of Pakistan. A member of Auckland’s Tamil group, Mrs M. Vaithianathan, said, “This is a peaceful protest against genocide in Sri Lanka of the Tamil people, and offers an opportunity to bring to the attention of the world the suffering of the minority.”
