Sparkling trial

Special correspondent Auckland Spanker On showed he was in fine trim for the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington next Tuesday when he returned a sparkling performance at a matinee meeting at Alexandra Park yesterday. After being parked out for most of the way in a 2700 m barrier trial, he scored narrowly from Comedy Lad and Miss Clevedon. Spanker On had started from 50m — Comedy Lad from 20m — and he cut out the last 800 m in a hectic 56.85. His trainer-driver,- Peter Wolfenden, was pleased with the run. “I wanted to give him a good run,” said Wolfenden,

“and he got it.” Spanker On will be flown to. Christchurch tomorrow along with Indette, which was also a competitor yesterday. Indette started from the difficult mark of 70m in the main event for trotters. She swept round the field in the middle stages and, without being asked for a serious effort, won by a neck from Bonny Paula. Gene Evander, which finished fourth in the trial won by Spanker On, and the trotter, Rick Evander, will leave for Christchurch by float on Friday morning. Rick Evander will be a starter in the $60,000 Dominion Handicap on the final night at Addington if he qualifies by winning earlier at the meeting.
