New Zealand on silk
Original silk screen images of New Zealand by Malcolm Warr are on show at the Small Gallery in the Shades Arcade.
The 22 framed pictures by the Waikanae artist depict New Zealand landscapes. Malcolm Warr specialises in stylised interpretations of the environment, captured in gradations of colour by screen printing. Light and movement are always a part of the prints. Malcolm Warr, who is 45, graduated from the Elam School of Fine Arts in 1960 with a diploma in fine arts with honours.
His work is represented in several galleries and libraries including the Canterbury Public Library and the new Parliamentary offices in Sydney.
The New Zealand Government has bought prints and paintings by Mr Warr for overseas embassies. His work is also in private and corporate collections both in New Zealand and overseas.
Mr Warr’s wife, Maree Lawrence, is also exhibiting at the Small Gallery. A former art teacher at Kapiti College, she is a ceramicist Her main theme is the human form, especially children. She works in clay to produce three-dimensional studies.
Her exhibition pieces are bronze casting sculptures of her own children. Maree Lawrence also studied at Elam and gained a diploma with honours in sculpture.
She has exhibited at several galleries between 1969 and 1980. Her work is permanently on show at the Malcolm Warr Studio in Waikanae. Since 1980 she has managed the studio. Her work is in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada and Britain.
The double exhibition, which was officially opened last evening, will run during November and December.
