Singer to tour U.S.
The winner of the 1983 Mobil Song Quest, Auckland baritone David Griffiths, will embark soon on a United States concert tour. It is the first time in the 28year history of the Song Quest that this has been part of the prize. Mr Griffiths’ wife, Christine, a former finalist in the Mobil Song Quest, and a pianist, will accompany him in recitals in Washington and in Utah at Salt Lake City, Logan, and Provo. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra will accompany David Griffiths in his performance as a soloist with the Messiah California Choir in Logan. He will also perform solos in concerts of
the Messiah at Provo and Salt Lake City. A former Wellingtonian, lain McKay, a judge at last year’s Mobil Song Quest, was instrumental in organising and promoting the three week tour. Mr McKay is based in Salt Lake City, and is the personal representative of many notable musicians and teachers, including Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s teacher, Vera Rosva. He is also a member of the audition committees of the San Francisco Opera and the Metropolitan Opera, and chairman of the United States Association of Teachers of Singing.
