Giddy beaten in bowls
PA Auckland Dean Stewart (Manurewa), starting only his fifth season of bowls, showed experience beyond his years to beat Sid Giddy (Arawa) in the final of the Counties professional singles yesterday. Stewart won the first two sets, 7-4, 7-6, before Giddy staged a come-back to take the third and fourth sets, 74, 7-6. But Stewart had the final say with a decisive 7-3 win in the fifth and final set to win a place in next February’s $50,000 international classic tournament in Christchurch. Giddy won the Northland Countrywide tournament a fortnight ago and has already won a place in the field in Christchurch. Stewart, a clerk in the
engineering department of the Post Office, has not decided whether to accept the $4OO prize money he won yesterday or have it placed in a trust account so that he can retain his amateur status.
Yesterday’s win was by far Stewart’s biggest so far.
He exhibited fine draw play off both hands and some useful running shots during the three and three quarter hour final. Earlier, Stewart disposed of Rex Noble (Hillsboro) in three straight sets, 7-5, 7-4, 7-6, in their semi-final. After being two sets up, the national pairs champion, Ivan Kostanich, (Helensville) had two chances to beat Giddy in the fifth set of their semi-final, before the Rotorua man drove him off the green and won 3-7, 6-7, 7-5, 7-2, 7-6.
