Brothers in shared win
Six brothers and two family friends this year decided that they would combine their interest in sport and play as a team in the Christchurch indoor cricket competitions. The brothers Muir, of Christchurch, joined Brendan Conaglen and Brian Bendall to form the Playschool team in the second division of the Wednesday evening competition and they won the grade, despite the fact that most of their previous cricketing experience had been confined to schooldays. The Muir boys, ranging in ages from 17 to 32 (they have three sisters, Sandra, aged 31, Rosemary, 27, and Cecile, aged 21), had previously devoted most of their attention to tennis, soccer and rugby. Tennis has always been their greatest interest, a passion they inherited from
their parents. Their father, Paul, was a South Island representative and their mother, Hazel, was a leading player in Eastern Southland.
Conflicting interests was the main reason for the brothers joining forces in a cricket team this year. The side, led by Paul, jun., aged 32, had one or two setbacks, but dropped only a few competition points in an outstanding season, marked by high batting averages.
Other members of the successful Muir cricketing family included Damian, aged 30, John, 29, David 23, Simon 19, and Kevin, 17.
