Port facilities scrutinised

Facilities and planned development at the Port of Lyttelton came under scrutiny by members of the New Zealand Ports’ Authority during a visit to the port yesterday.

The five-member authority was taken on a tour of the port by the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s chairman, Mr G. E. Wright, the deputy chairman, Mr P. J. Skellerup, and executive officers of the board.

The authority’s chairman, Rear-Admiral K. M. Sauli, and Messrs C. R. Hervey, K. S. Calder, F. A. Reeves and B. S. Cole were shown the port’s bulk-loading facility, the container terminal, the Magazine Bay marina, development work near the No. 7 wharf, and the improvement of Cashin Quay No. 2. Work on the $1.4 million

strengthening of the Cashin Quay berth was approved by the authority late last year. The Harbour Board’s general manager, Mr I. H. Brokenshire, said that the tour had been arranged to familiarise the members with developments at the port. “They had a comprehensive look at all port facilities and the planned shortterm and long-term developments,” he said. The authority regularly visits all New Zealand ports and last met at Lyttelton in September, 1982. All capital development work at Lyttelton valued at more than $500,000 is required to have the approval of the authority. A meeting of the authority will be held at the Harbour Board’s Christchurch office today.
