250,000 natives planted
The Forest Service planted 250,000 native tree seedlings in natural forests last year. The annual report of the Director-General of Forests, Mr Andy Kirkland, says that native seedlings were planted in more than 1000 hectares of forest. Tending programmes, such as fertilising, freeing seedlings from weed growth, and pruning, were done over 970 hectares of native forest. More than 20,000 hectares of new pine forest were planted and 8000 hectares were replanted after logging, said the report. Tending programmes in pine forests were done over more than 100,000 hectares.
