Cyclist assaulted

A young cyclist had a bottle smashed in her face when she refused to give money to two men who stopped her in Hagley Avenue near Christchurch Hospital early on Tuesday morning. The woman, aged 19, suffered minor cuts. She was stopped by the two men while cycling to a Cashel Street bakery where she works as an apprentice baker. One man held her bicycle and the other demanded money. She told them she had none, and was then hit

with a bottle. The men then ran away. Her assailants are described as Maoris, both aged in their early 20s, and about 170 cm (sft 7in) tall. One was solidly built, with black, collar-length hair and a black moustache. He was wearing a black leather jacket which was ripped in the front, a yellow T-shirt, dirty jeans, and earrings. His companion had black, spiked hair and was wearing a blue denim jacket and jeans.
