Time protest to continue
PA Dargaville It is “Goodnight New Zealand” from Ararua on Saturday night. Farmers in the small Northland community will make a timely departure from the rest of New Zealand because they will not acknowledge the arrival of daylight time and the requirement to put clocks forward an hour. Their new standard will be Ararua time — an hour behind daylight time. The community 56km
south of Dargaville will hold a dance on Saturday to celebrate its secession. The protest has created a spin-off for local industry. T-shirts saying, “Don’t do it in the dark” are being made, and so are bumper stickers. To this can be added a rugby locker-room song pointing out the advantages of Ararua time. For those wanting to see at first hand this renegade community, a special Ararua time zone signpost is being made.
