Officers linked to 1980 massacre
NZPA-AP London The National Coal Board’s new spokesman urged mine foremen yesterday to hold a new vote and call off a threatened strike this week that could shut down the entire British coal industry. “Having had virtually all their points conceded, what on earth are they going to go on strike for?” said Mr Michael Eaton, who was named at the week-end to take over presenting to the public the Coal Board’s case
NZPA-Reuter Rome Two former Italian Intelligence officers arrested last week were being investigated about a bomb explosion at Bologna railway station, in central Italy, which killed 85 people in 1980, justice sources said. General Pietro Musumeci, a former vice-director of the military secret service, Sismi, and Colonel Giuseppe Belmonte, a one-time colleague, were among six people arrested on Friday on charges of conspiracy,
embezzlement, and possessing arms and explosives. Justice sources said that the two had been told they were under investigation for the bombing, on August 2, 1980, one of Italy’s worst post-war atrocities. No-one has so far been brought to trial. Italian State television said investigators suspected that former Sismi officers had tried in 1981 to pin the bombing on West German neo-Nazis in a bid to confuse inquiries.
