Speedway season opens

The Woodford Glen Speedway season began on Sunday with some action packed racing. After spasmodic appearances, last season, caused mainly by major mechanical problems, Gerald Griffiths showed he had ironed out the bugs and was back to form with two wins and a second in the stock races. Griffiths is running two cars, one as a back-up. The back-up car was driven by Keith Fergusson who won the Shell “stirrer of the meeting” award. Bob Burgess made a welcome return to the Glen in his “Fender Bender” Valiant to win both street stock races and spun every other competitor off the track in the process. The B grade saloon car driver Peter Marsh will remember the first meeting of the season. He lost control of

his Mkl Escort and was tossed unceremoniously into the concrete wall to become the driver of the first car to roll for the season. Meanwhile, the Timaru driver, Neville Stillwell, had no trouble in winning the two races in this class and then drove a fine race for second in the Cookie Time saloon feature. The saloon feature was eventually won by Greg Keegan, in his Escort keeping the V 8 saloons at bay for the 12 laps. Keegan also won the A grade saloon race, with Roy Granger in his Monza winning the other. Steven Child was an easy winner in the two Sportsman events which were more like demonstrations than races owing to the . small fields. Results:— Street stocks.— Skyline Garages race: B.
