Bangladesh wants more trade, aid

PA Wellington Bangladesh wants more trade with New Zealand, and aid, the new High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand, Major-Gen-eral Quazi Golam Dastgir, has said. At present New Zealand gives no direct aid to Bangladesh, though Australia gives $2O million-a year. General Dastgir, who will be based in Canberra, said talks with the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, and chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Ms Helen Clark, impressed him and reassured him that Bangladesh would not be forgotten in the new focus on India. The appointment of Sir Edmund Hillary as High Commissioner to India, with accreditation to Bangladesh, was another optimistic sign for his country, which still remembered the tremendous good will engendered by a visit by the former Labour ■ Prime Minister, Norman Kirk, in 1974. - General Dastgir said he would like a big increase in scientific, educational, and cultural exchanges between the two countries, and the setting up of training and technical programmes.
