Armed offenders squad called
The Greymouth armed offenders squad was sent to Westport yesterday afternoon after reports that firearms had been seen during an altercation on Saturday between members of the Highway 61 motor-cycle gang, from Christchurch, and Westport people associated with the Buller Unemployment Centre. The squad augmented the Westport police in searching the centre and ? house
where the Christchurch group was staying. No firearms were found, but an assorted collection of weapons was seized, including swords and machetes. A Westport police spokesman said last evening that the situation had been defused, but would be watched closely. The Greymouth squad would be replaced by a shadow patrol from Christchurch, he said.
