Strawberry Road finishes third
NZPA-AP Laurel, Maryland
Seattle Song, a French entry without a win in five previous starts this year, overtook Britain’s Alphabatim in the straight to win the $250,000 ($NZ500,000) Washington D.C. International on Saturday by three lengths at Laurel Racecourse. It was the third successive victory for a French entry in the thirty-third running, of the 2400-metre classic.
Persian Tiara, of the United States, finished strongly for second, a half-
length ahead of Strawberry Road, the five-year-old Australian entry. Nassipour, of the United States, a late replacement for his stablemate Domynsky, finished fourth, ahead of Balkan Prince, of Belgium. Seattle Song, the three-year-old son of Seattle Slew which was bought by the Greek shipping magnate, Stavros Niarchos, for $350,000 is trained by Francois Boutin and was ridden by the American, Cash Asmussen, who combined to win the race with April Run in 1982.
