Canterbury Belle will be Rangiora attraction

By

J. J. BOYLE

The exciting youthful talent of Canterbury Belle offers a ready-made attraction for the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting at Rangiora today.

There will be no inviting odds about her chances as she attempts to preserve her unbeaten record into its third start in the Ashley Meats Mile, for three-year-olds. She has won her two races with stylish ease, and if she triumphs again with some authority today she will consolidate her position high on the list of fancies for the Wrightson-sponsored $lOO,OOO One Thousand

Guineas at Riccarton next week. Canterbury Belle is the only filly in today’s race. Hint won last year’s event at the expense of Gaffa, which went on to win the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas. The line-up of colts and geldings against Canterbury Belle was weakened yesterday with the withdrawal of the Washdyke-trained Jonny Alone, a close second in the Gore Guineas on Saturday.

In his absence, the main strength of oppositon for Canterbury .Belle might come from Pokare. and Secured Money. Pokare will be ridden by Grant Davison, who, in partnership with Queen’s Pal, made a rewarding hit-and-run raid on Trentham on Saturday. Davison’s hopeful for the Lion Brown North Canterbury Cup, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double is Juliets

Boy. This Noble Bijou gelding has improved with each of his two starts this season, and it will be surprising if he is not one of the contending figures in the finish. The Wingatui jockey John Dowling, will pass over the second day of the Gore meeting to partner form runners for Ray Pankhurst’s successful Oraro stable in the T.A.B. double races. Our Secret Weapon goes into the North Canterbury

Cup as winner of his last three races and his stablemate, Cadmium, also has obvious claims after a win and a third from as many starts this season. The main strength of opposition for Cadmium could come from Tirana Tirana was luckless in the running in the Timaru club’s weight-for-age Woodfields Stakes.
