Fencing title to former president
The retired president of the New Zealand Fencing Association, Mr Richard Peterson, showed he had not lost touch with the sport when he won the sabre title at the national championships at Christchurch Boys’ High School yesterday. Peterson, of Wellington, beat the defending champion, Andrew Harmos, of Auckland, into second place with some determined and aggressive fighting. Patrie Kell, a Christchurch schoolboy, also made an impression in the tournament by winning a place among the six finalists in the sabre competition. On Saturday, Stephen Clarke overcame his “erratic build-up” to gain an impressive win in the men’s foil event. Clarke recently shifted to Christchurch but is fighting for Auckland in the tournament. He won the event ahead of two Wellingtonians, Peter Osvath and Peterson, while the top Australian competitor, Richard Seth-Purdie failed to turn up at the tournament. / An upset occurred in Saturday’s fighting when Lesley Calver lost her foil title to the well-performed New Zealand University representative from Wellington, Sarah Goddard. Canterbury’s Jane Lindsay, who won the North Island title ahead of Calver and Goddard earlier this year, finished third.
