Groups ‘push own barrow’ on A.N.Z.U.S.
Certain American commercial sectors were seeking to use discussions about the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance to “push their own barrow,” said the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, yesterday. New Zealand was no stranger to protectionist moves, he said. The biggest lobby of all, the White House, had traditionally moved to stop such moves, Mr Lange said in New Delhi.
“We are in the same round again,” he said. “Moves have been made, threats have been uttered.
“But the United States Secretary of State, Mr George Shultz, has specifically pledged they will not use economic sanctions to procure some understanding about defence arrangements.”
Mr Lange restated his commitment to New Zealand remaining in A.N.Z.U.S. Contrasting his Government’s attitude to India’s commitment to a nonaligned stance, Mr Lange said New Zealand was still essentially a member of the “so-called” Western alliance.
