Porirua unions want joint approach
PA Wellington Porirua Hospital unions want the Wellington Hospital Board to join them in an approach to the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, over problems at the institution. The joint deputation was proposed at a meeting between union representatives and board officers, an hour after a special board meeting had withdrawn a threat of suspension or dismissal against staff who refused to co-operate with the closing of a ward at the psychiatric hospital. The board wants to close the Weymouth ward for elderly male patients as Porirua’s contribution to
cuts to meet a ?2 million reduction in board funding. Staff have refused to assist in the closing and last week the board passed a resolution which included the suspension threat. Union officials refused to negotiate with the board on the issue until the threats were lifted.
