Mairehau pupil wins competition

A Mairehau High School pupil, Mark Tomlinson, has won the Bank of New Zealand Mathematics Competition held in Christchurch yesterday. Peter Manning, of Mahurangi College (Northland) was awarded second place, and Spencer Scoular, of Nelson College, was third. Twenty finalists from throughout New Zealand sat the 90-minute final paper at the University of Canter-

bury yesterday. The results were announced at a function at Christchurch Boys’ High School last evening. The first prize was a $3OO bank account with the Bank of New Zealand, second prize was a $2OO bank account, and third prize was a $lOO bank account. About 3800 sixth-formers and seventh-formers from 200 schools throughout New Zealand sat a preliminary paper to establish the finalists.
