Warning on ‘silent majority’
Parliamentary reporter
The “silent majority” — the elderly, families, children, and young people at risk — could not be allowed to continue without a voice, said the Minister of Social Welfare, Mrs Hercus. She was praising the work of the Wellington Presbyterian Support Services for 75' years service. The caring agencies had a role to play, not just in supporting the unfortunate and needy, but in acting as advocates for them too.
It was very damaging to talk about the “silent majority,” Mrs Hercus said. The Government had to seek out and listen to the views and needs of people in all sectors of society.. Many of those views and needs had to be articulated by the agencies working with them.
