Minister opens computer network

PA Wellington The Education Minister of Education, Mr Marshall, has inaugurated a national computer network which will eventually connect public libraries throughout New Zealand. In an address before the connection of computer terminals at the Wellington Public Library to the national bibliographic network, Mr Marshall said that access to the National Library’s database would i improve both rurakand uriban libraries.

Each library with a terminal, no matter how small or remote, would have the same access to information as the biggest library in New Zealand. Fifteen were expected to join the network this year. The network would also allow New Zealand libraries to exchange information with national libraries in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia. After two years the database for the network allowed a “one-step” search of more than 2% million records. he said. _
